Northern Virginia Therapeutic Riding Program

Background

The Northern Virginia Therapeutic Riding Program (NVTRP) is a nonprofit providing equine assisted activities for children and adults with disabilities, youth-at-risk, recovering military service personnel, and their families in an inclusive, community setting. For most of its existence, NVTRP had been using donated space at different public stables which caused inconsistency and distractions for the organization’s clients.

Challenge

NVTRP had an opportunity to purchase a permanent home for its programs and establish the NVTRP Center of Excellence that would offer clients expanded opportunities to work with physical and occupational therapists and speech pathologists, access to a motor sensory room, art and music therapy, and a space for clients and their families to form support networks. NVTRP planned to launch a $3 million campaign to raise the seed money for their plans. Up to this point, NVTRP had relied on a small annual fundraising program that covered only the general operations for the organization, but needed to create a strong campaign infrastructure to launch this ambitious fundraising effort.

Solution

Windmill Hill Consulting (WHC) first assisted NVTRP with their campaign planning by crafting their case statement, gift pyramid, campaign volunteer structure, job descriptions, and training materials as well as prioritizing, qualifying, and adding to their prospect pipeline. WHC also worked with NVTRP staff and Board leadership on initial prospect outreach and supported donor cultivation activities of the Executive Director and Board Chair.

Results

The momentum of the campaign began to build with the collaboration with WHC. NVTRP’s staff and board leadership were now prepared to embark on the next phase of this ambitious campaign; they now had a plan in place thanks to the groundwork laid by WHC. The “Raise the Barn” campaign as of October 1, 2015 is halfway to its financial goal having already raised $1,500,000.
